The work study program is designed for those wishing to delve deeply into a spiritual practice. Students participate in the yogic lifestyle, living in a community with 15-20 other resident yogis.
Ashram residents’ main practice is Seva, or selfless service. Seva is considered “Karma Yoga” or the Yoga of action. Throughout the day students participate in different Seva projects designed to maintain the ashram facility and offer a welcoming and nourishing environment for our guests. Different Seva projects may include cleaning, assisting with cooking, chopping wood/grounds maintenance, or computer/office work.
During this time students are encouraged to practice Japa, or mantra repetition, to develop a conscious awareness and presence of mind. Work-study participants take our morning Pranayama and Hatha Yoga Classes once a week.

- We teach classical Hatha Yoga in the Shambhava tradition. Shambhava Yoga is a meditative style of yoga and is designed to prepare the body for sitting meditation. The practitioner is encouraged to develop an inward focus, breath awareness, and an understanding of correct postural alignment.
Shambhava meditation offers a variety of practices for many types of seekers. Mantra repetition and breath awareness are main practices. Our living teacher, His Holiness Rishi Maha Mandaleshwar Sri Shambhavananda, is a master of Kundalini meditation. This practice brings attention to the breath and the movement and awareness of spiritual energy in the body.

"When you serve something greater than your own needs you find tremendous joy. People such as Mother Teresa, people who have given themselves to something greater than themselves, always radiate with this happiness. On a material level they don't have much. . . but they have an inner joy and an inner radiance. They have discovered something."
